Buttermilk Pie YES, BUTTERMILK PIE! #dessert

One of the many things I love about my husband was his mother. She’s no longer with us, but she was a dear and a delight and an angel on earth.

She was also an AWESOME cook.

She was one of those aggravating cooks who cook by feel and not by recipe (the kind of cook I’ve become, she would have been proud to know) — mostly. Luckily, she had a recipe for buttermilk pie and shared it with me.

#1 Daughter and Charlie were talking about it last week and, since #1 Daughter’s birthday was coming up, I surprised her by making this pie. Seems she didn’t know Mrs. Allen had given me the recipe; now we both have it. I love that about recipes: how they pass down and spread out.

You can use a store-bought pie crust or make your own.

BUTTERMILK PIE

  • 1/2 stick margarine (I use vegan margarine)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp flour
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • pecan halves

Cream sugar, margarine, flour. Add eggs, buttermilk, vanilla. Place pecans on bottom of pie shell to cover. Add liquid. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes.

I made a regular one for #1 Daughter and a little square one for Charlie and me (yes, that’s grammatically correct; “I made one for me” SO “I made one for Charlie and me”).

ButtermilkPieThose lumps are the pecans, covered with sugary goodness.

We like buttermilk pie better than we like pecan pie, and we LUUUURRRRVV pecan pie!

I have Mom’s cookbook. Plus a number of recipes we used all the time in her handwriting (such as it was, sweetie wrote fasst.). I also have receipts written out in her sister’s hand. I once attempted to compile, via Xerox, a cookbook out of these (plus my own additions), but no one I thought I’d given one to could recall having it. Hmmm. Either the elves have been busy, or my gift made no impression. Anyway…. I now plan to use my scanner and do this sucker again. (Yes, Marian, you will get the FIRST copy. Promise!)

The buttermilk pie looks so easy and SCRUMPTIOUS.

I only have both my grandmothers’ key recipes by my very poor recall, Grannie’s dumplings and Mamaw’s biscuits. Oddly, quick rising flour figures prominently in each. At least they both showed me how to make them, and visual memory is pretty strong…..

Your family cookbook sounds wonderful! Give ’em again!

Mom says she can remember her mother making a well in the flour in the flour bin, pouring in milk, kneading the damp flour into a ball, and lifting it out to make biscuits. I’m like, “That’s like a superpower!” It was undoubtedly self-rising flour.

Oh YES! That’s what Mamaw did. Except she lifted a pile of flour out onto the pull-out kneading board, poured in the liquid, etc. Then the bin was opened out again, and whoosh all the loose flour was raked back in! Thanks for that visual.

Happy to oblige, Shelly! Is your recipe similar to my mother-in-law’s?

I looked all over for my buttermilk pie recipe and couldn’t find the recipe. I have no idea what happened to it. No wonder I forgot about the recipe!
